TuacaCon 2011 – Nathan Lowell

Nathan Lowell is one of the Writer Guests of Honor for TuacaCon 2011 (along with Philippa J. Ballantine and Tee Morris).

Nathan Lowell has been a writer for more than forty years, and first entered the literary world by podcasting his novels. His sci-fi series, Trader’s Tales from The Golden Age of the Solar Clipper, grew from his long time fascination with space opera and his own experiences shipboard in the United States Coast Guard. Unlike most works which focus on a larger-than-life hero (prophesized savior, charismatic captain, or exiled prince), Nathan centers on the people behind the scenes–ordinary men and women trying to make a living in the depths of space. In his novels, there are no bug-eyed monsters, or galactic space battles, instead he paints a richly vivid and realistic world where the “hero” uses hard work and his own innate talents to improve his station and the lives of those of his community.

Dr. Nathan Lowell holds a Ph.D. in Educational Technology with specializations in Distance Education and Instructional Design. He also holds an M.A. in Educational Technology and a BS in Business Administration. He grew up on the south coast of Maine and is strongly rooted in the maritime heritage of the sea-farer. He served in the USCG from 1970 to 1975, seeing duty aboard a cutter on hurricane patrol in the North Atlantic and at a communications station in Kodiak, Alaska. He currently lives in the plains east of the Rocky Mountains with his wife and two daughters.

Nathan has one two Parsec Awards for novels from his “Share” Series.

TuacaCon 2011 – Charity Element…

Not playing this up too much since TuacaCon is sort of a drinking event disguised as a live author/musician share your work sort of thing, but during the live-streaming event I will be mentioning a charity that I and many podcasters have supported in the past, The Leiomyosarcoma Direct Research Fund.

Joe Murphy (Kick-Ass Mystic Ninjas, Michael and Evo’s Wingin’ It) was an early podcaster that inspired many of us to get out here and do our thing. He passed away from Leiomyosarcoma in 2007. If we can raise a little money for cancer research while we drink and share some great fiction and music with you guys, it’ll be a great evening.

Ditched by Kate Press Pic

We are proud to announce that Ditched By Kate is the Musical Guest of Honor at TuacaCon 2011.

Ditched by Kate is an alternative rock band that exploded onto the Washington DC scene in 2010. They have been winning over crowds with their unique blend of emotion filled lyrics and melodic riffs that can sway from blues to grunge to driving rock.

Members include horror author Phil Rossi, SpecFicMedia Podcaster Chooch Schubert, Dennis Kapoyos, Jenn Taylor and Keith Taylor.

Music videos of the band will be featured throughout TuacaCon including songs from their upcoming album that have not been heard anywhere else before.

TuacaCon 2011

Good morning, P.G. Holyfield here. TuacaCon is a virtual convention that I started last year. Tuaca became one of the “liquors of choice” at the conventions I attend (most notably Balticon and Dragon*Con), and became the ‘unofficial’ mascot of the convention (The company that makes this wonderful liquer is not associated with the convention or with SpecFicMedia.com in any way, other than we like the stuff!).

So what is TuacaCon? Last year in November, we had a 9 hour live “show” online, with author readings, interviews, live music, and live and recorded comedic skits from several podcasters across the U.S. We used UStream.tv for the broadcast, and had a lot of fun with the event (even though I might have imbibed a little too much and fell asleep at the wheel near the end of the night).

This year I plan on doing things right (or at least a little better), with more contributors, the addition of panels on pertinent speculative fiction topics, and more interaction with our audience (well, some of our audience, not the ones that post “Show my your boobs!” in the chat… oh yeah, that was me.).

If you are a writer, musician, or comedian that has the ability to do webcam work (or prerecorded video, in certain cases), please comment here or send me an email at pgholyfield at specficmedia.com. TuacaCon 2011 will be Saturday, November 12th, starting time and duration of the event yet to be determined at this time. I will start organizing this ‘convention’ in earnest starting October 1st.

TuacaCon 2011 – Virtual Convention… Real Debauchery.

Delays…

With Balticon this past weekend (and some personal stuff), you might have noticed some delays with content on the site. My apologies.

Episode 6 of Beyond The Wall will be released as soon as I can finish it (hopefully tonight). Episode 6 of the “Eye of Newb” will definitely be released today. Episode 7 of Beyond The Wall will be released before the end of the weekend, along with a special “Hodor” episode of Beyond The Wall… it may be 100 degrees in North Carolina today, but rest assured… Winter is still Coming.

Beyond The Wall – Promo

You know how in “The Princess Bride” Miracle Max says “It just so happens that your friend here is only MOSTLY dead.”?

Well, this promo is “MOSTLY” safe for work. The worst bits are bleeped, but it’s still pretty NSFW (just like Game of Thrones), so be careful how loudly you play it. 🙂

If you are from another podcast, please let me know if you grab this promo and use it in your podcast. I’ll return the favor (or at least put your link on a special page on the site, since we don’t play too many promos).

Website News: Podcast Announcement

SpecFicMedia.com plans on launching several podcasts over the next few months, and we’re just about ready for the first of these to begin.

SpecFicMedia.com Presents: Beyond the Wall – A Game of Thrones Podcast.

Join P.G. Holyfield (author of Murder at Avedon Hill and SFM Founder), Nuchtchas (Host of Nutty Bites Podcast), Chooch (Into the Blender Podcast Co-Host, and bassist of Ditched By Kate) and Vivid Muse (Into the Blender Podcast Co-Host), Girls’ Rules Podcast Host) as we discuss the HBO television series Game of Thrones.

While we’ll be focusing on the television series, we’ll also spend time on most of the other forms of media tied to the Song of Ice and Fire series by George R.R. Martin, including (of course) the novels, the RPG and board games, and anything else we can sink our respective direwolf-loving teeth into.

Website News – The SFM YouTube Channel

I’ve opened up a YouTube Channel for SpecFicMedia.com – http://www.youtube.com/user/SpecFicMedia – while there will be more videos on the website, and more of a chance for audience participation, YouTube is a primary means of letting people know we’re here. It needs some work, but at least it’s at the point where people can subscribe and learn about us. Go forth and spread the word!

In case you didn’t know, our twitter feed is at @specficmedia. And coming soon… the SpecFicMedia.com Page on Facebook.
