Podcast Announcement – SFM Presents: Consumption

SFM Presents: Consumption is a new podcast/Google Hangout/YouTube show we’re starting this week.

specficmedia_logoSpecFicMedia.com Presents: Consumption

Some of us are media content creators; others are creators of a different type, make, or model… but all of us are media consumers. SFM Presents: Consumption will be a show where the hosts and a guest will talk about what media they are consuming (with a focus on speculative fiction media, of course). Movies, television, games, books, comic books… they’re all on the table.

As with BTW, the bulk of the show will be spoiler-free (as some of our discussions will be about things that some of the hosts may not have played, read, seen, or heard). But unlike BTW, we will have a spoiler section at the end of each podcast where all topics are fair game.

Our first episode/live show will be Wednesday, July 31st at 9 pm Eastern time. Viewer Q&A will be done through YouTube. I will post the link here when the time comes, but the best place to find our content is our YouTube channel.

Hosts:

P.G. Holyfield (author of Murder at Avedon Hill and SFM Founder
Christiana Ellis (too many podcasts to list here, but you can check out all things Christiana at her site).
Chooch (Into the Blender Podcast Co-Host, and bassist of Ditched By Kate)
Vivid Muse (Into the Blender Podcast Co-Host, Girls\\™ Rules Podcast Host)

Our first guest will be Matthew Wayne Selznick, author of Brave Men Run and the recently released sequel, Pilgrimage.

Special LIVE BTW: Sunday, 6 PM Eastern – Cosmoquest.org Hangout-a-Thon

hangoutathon

CosmoQuest is an organization that over the last few years has created a great community dedicated to “citizen science.” It is a virtual research facility where anyone can join in and perform activities that will help true scientific programs. One of these programs (which I understand enough to speak about) is their Moon Mappers program:

NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC) has taken millions of photos of the moon. These photos have craters… LOTS of craters. It takes a lot of scientific manpower and software… um… computing power… to map those craters. What does this mean? Scientists have spend a LOT of time studying photos instead of analyzing the data those photos provide us. So, CosmoQuest has a program where YOU can go in and map those craters.

That’s only one example of “citizen science” that CosmoQuest organizes and/or promotes.

But now, CosmoQuest is dealing with governmental funding cuts to science education and research. But they’re not going to sulk about it. They’re going to do something about it. This weekend CosmoQuest is holding a “Hangout-a-Thon” to raise money. And since I love these people, and they do great work, we’re going to help.

On Sunday, June 16th, spend a little bit of Father’s Day hanging out with Beyond The Wall. It will be a short video live show, from 6:15 to 7 pm Eastern time, and we will be joined by Dr. Pamela Gay and Dr. Nicole Gugliucci to talk about “Weather in Westeros!”

For background on the Hangout-a-thon, go here.

If you are interested in science in any way, check out the entire schedule of the Hangout-a-thon here.

Here is the google plus event page for the event.

We will post the URL for the video info here and on Facebook on Saturday afternoon, as soon as I have it. Please come watch. And seriously, I’ve never asked you for money. So if you have liked the Beyond the Wall for the last 3 seasons, please consider donating to CosmoQuest through the link below.

Here’s the description from the Cosmoquest website:

Help us save science education from sequestration!

On March 22, 2013 we found out that many NASA EPO programs will be suspended as a direct result of US budgetary sequestration. The full ramifications are still being learned, but we are proactively working to raise money to make sure that CosmoQuest can continue to support its staff and its programs. As we are able, we will also use any monies we raise to contract amazing people whose jobs are negatively impacted by budgetary cuts.

Your donation will support science education
that produces science!

Audio: Beyond the Wall – Season 3, Ep. 1

“Valar Dohaeris”

First off, apologies about the audio quality. I didn’t realize how bad my sound was until it was too late. I blame Nicole Gugliucci (because she’s fun to blame for no reason). I wish I could say “You had ONE JOB, GUGLIUCCI.” But she didn’t know to tell me I was way too echoey and crap. 😉

Next time will be better. I’ve moved to a new location for next week’s Google Hangout… well, a new room anyways.

ANYHOO… the audio here is better than it was during the Hangout.

My Small Council did great work during the show, and I hope you enjoy their efforts.

During the Hangout, I referred to several images… here they are:

Video: Beyond The Wall: Season 3 – Episode 0

So, this year we’ll be doing Google Hangouts for all of our episodes. We’ll also be releasing audio versions of everything we do as podcast episodes, so don’t worry.

On Saturday, Chooch, Viv, Nutty and Christiana joined P.G. Holyfield to discuss the how we’ve been preparing for Season 3 of the HBO Series Game of Thrones.

I will add notes tomorrow… maybe.

Living NaNoWriMo

I have participated in NaNoWriMo on three different occasions (2006,2007, and 2009). The most I’ve ever written was the first year, when I managed to crank out 36,000 words on Murder at Avedon Hill. This year I will be ‘doing NaNo,’ and I’ve invited some friends to join me on this journey. You might know some of these writers, and podcasters (and one is best known as an astronomer), but these are all friends that are going to take time before November 1st and and take time away from writing during November to share their experiences, and in so doing, I hope we will help each other succeed at this.

For those of you that don’t know, NaNoWriMo is National Novel Writing Month, November, and the goal of NaNo is to write 50,000 words in 30 days.

More on this in the next couple of days, including information on the “Kick-off Hangouts,” which will take place on Sunday afternoon and evening.

So what will “Living NaNoWriMo” be? It will consist of several Google Hangouts, longer form ones prior to November first, and then shorter ones during the month. I will be creating a page here on the site which will list the google hangout schedule, and I hope you’ll stop by and ask questions, and cheer us on. It’s all about ‘accountability’ and ‘supporting each other,’ and if you are doing NaNo as well, I hope we will be able to support you on your journey as well.

Who are the participants that will be joining me on this journey?

  • Pamela Gay, astronomer, writer, and podcaster (Astronomy Cast)
  • Justin Macumber, writer and podcaster (The Dead Robot’s Society)
  • Starla Huchton, writer, graphic designer, musician, podcaster (The Dreamer’s Thread)
  • Zachary Ricks, writer, publisher, attorney, podcaster (The Galley Table Podcast)
  • Nicole Ireland, writer, blogger (A Second Chance)
  • Martyn Casserly, journalist, musician, writer (Living with the Future)

And of course me, P.G. Holyfield, proprietor of SpecFicMedia.com and author of Murder at Avedon Hill. Come back tomorrow for more information on the google hangouts that will take place on Sunday.
